THE QUICK READ
Tyson Foods runs one of Mississippi's largest poultry processing plants in Carthage, where crews process about 2.3 million chickens per week at a rate of 364 birds per minute. Tyson acquired the plant through its purchase of Choctaw Maid Farms in 2003 and expanded the facility from roughly 60,000 to 315,000 square feet, making it one of the biggest chicken processing operations in the country. A nearby hatchery expansion in Walnut Grove feeds chicks directly to the Carthage and Forest, Mississippi plants. Carthage is the county seat of Leake County, a small town of about 4,900 people near the geographic center of Mississippi, roughly 60 miles northeast of Jackson.

ABOUT TYSON FOODS
Tyson Foods began in 1935 when John W. Tyson started hauling chickens for sale from Arkansas, incorporating in 1947 and going public in 1963. It grew through acquisitions, including IBP in 2001, which added large-scale beef and pork processing, and Hillshire Brands in 2014, adding Jimmy Dean and Ball Park to its own Tyson, Hillshire Farm, Wright Brand, Aidells, and State Fair brands. By fiscal 2025, Tyson operated roughly 200 facilities worldwide, employed about 133,000 people, and reported $54.4 billion in revenue. It trades publicly on the NYSE under ticker TSN, while the Tyson family retains majority voting control through a dual-class share structure.
