THE QUICK READ

Barber Foods makes stuffed chicken breast products at a 250,000-square-foot plant on St. John Street in Portland, Maine, a product line that started in 1971 when founder Gus Barber was inspired by a stuffed potato he saw in a Texas grocery store. Gus originally opened the business as Barber Beef and Poultry in 1955, and Tyson now owns the plant through its $4.2 billion acquisition of AdvancePierre Foods in 2017. The facility's ammonia refrigeration system holds roughly 34,000 pounds, above the 10,000-pound federal threshold that triggers a process safety management program. Portland is Maine's largest city with about 68,000 people, sitting on a peninsula along Casco Bay on the Atlantic coast.

ABOUT TYSON FOODS

Tyson Foods began in 1935 when John W. Tyson started hauling chickens for sale from Arkansas, incorporating in 1947 and going public in 1963. It grew through acquisitions, including IBP in 2001, which added large-scale beef and pork processing, and Hillshire Brands in 2014, adding Jimmy Dean and Ball Park to its own Tyson, Hillshire Farm, Wright Brand, Aidells, and State Fair brands. By fiscal 2025, Tyson operated roughly 200 facilities worldwide, employed about 133,000 people, and reported $54.4 billion in revenue. It trades publicly on the NYSE under ticker TSN, while the Tyson family retains majority voting control through a dual-class share structure.
