THE QUICK READ
Trident Seafoods operates a year-round seafood processing plant in Sand Point, Alaska, where crews process wild Alaska pollock, all five species of Pacific salmon, cod, halibut, black cod, and crab harvested by a local fleet of independently owned catcher vessels. The plant can handle up to 1.5 million pounds of pollock or 350,000 pounds of salmon per day, with staffing that fluctuates seasonally from about 50 to over 500 workers during peak runs. Its ammonia refrigeration system holds roughly 23,000 pounds, above the 10,000-pound federal threshold that triggers a process safety management program. Sand Point sits on Popof Island in the Shumagin Islands, 560 miles southwest of Anchorage near the tip of the Alaska Peninsula, and serves as the borough seat of the Aleutians East Borough with a year-round population near 1,000.

ABOUT TRIDENT SEAFOODS
Trident Seafoods was founded in 1973 by Chuck Bundrant and two fishing partners, starting with a single vessel that combined crab harvesting and processing at sea. The company grew to process Alaska pollock, salmon, crab, and other whitefish, opening a value-added plant in Anacortes, Washington in 1988 to supply pollock to national restaurant chains. Headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Trident now operates processing plants in Alaska, Georgia, Minnesota, and Washington. The company remains privately held, majority owned by the Bundrant family, with Chuck's son Joe Bundrant serving as chief executive officer.
