The Tom Thumb Alliance Distribution Center in Roanoke, Texas serves as the Safeway and Albertsons Southern Division distribution hub, supplying Tom Thumb, Randalls, and Albertsons grocery stores across the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The facility was originally built as a Food Lion distribution center in 1991, and Randall's purchased it in 1999 after Food Lion pulled out of Texas. About 505 workers operate the facility around the clock, moving product through dry, refrigerated, and frozen storage zones. The site's ammonia refrigeration system holds roughly 28,000 pounds, above the 10,000-pound federal threshold that triggers a process safety management program. Roanoke is a city of about 10,000 people in Denton County, roughly 20 miles northwest of Fort Worth.

ABOUT SAFEWAY

Safeway traces to 1915, when Marion Barton Skaggs bought his father's small grocery store in American Falls, Idaho, and built it into a chain of hundreds of stores across the West. In 1926 his company merged with the Sam Seelig Company to form Safeway, Inc. It later grew through acquisitions including Vons, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Carrs-Safeway. In January 2015, Albertsons, backed by Cerberus Capital Management, acquired Safeway for about $9.4 billion, combining the two chains into more than 2,200 stores. Safeway now operates as an Albertsons subsidiary with roughly 900 stores across the western and mid-Atlantic United States.
