Safeway Phoenix Ice Cream Plant
Not affiliated with Safeway.
THE QUICK READ
Safeway's ice cream plant in Phoenix turns milk and cream into packaged ice cream, in half-gallons, pints, five-quart pails, and ice cream sandwiches sold under brands like Lucerne, Safeway Select, and Dairy Glen. Maintenance and refrigeration techs here keep the container-forming machines, mixing lines, and freezing equipment running. The plant holds roughly 40,400 pounds of ammonia for refrigeration, large enough to require a formal process safety management program, since federal rules kick in at 10,000 pounds.

ABOUT SAFEWAY
Safeway traces to 1915, when Marion Barton Skaggs bought his father's small grocery store in American Falls, Idaho, and built it into a chain of hundreds of stores across the West. In 1926 his company merged with the Sam Seelig Company to form Safeway, Inc. It later grew through acquisitions including Vons, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Carrs-Safeway. In January 2015, Albertsons, backed by Cerberus Capital Management, acquired Safeway for about $9.4 billion, combining the two chains into more than 2,200 stores. Safeway now operates as an Albertsons subsidiary with roughly 900 stores across the western and mid-Atlantic United States.
