THE QUICK READ

Safeway's San Leandro plant takes in raw milk and turns it into packaged dairy products for company stores, running separation, heat treatment, and UHT (ultra-high-temperature) lines that pasteurize milk, cream, and other dairy items before filling and packaging. The plant holds roughly 18,000 pounds of ammonia on site — large enough to require a formal process safety management program, since federal rules kick in at 10,000 pounds. A newer extended-shelf-life expansion added equipment for dairy and non-dairy products, like shelf-stable creamers, giving San Leandro workers more product lines to run.

ABOUT SAFEWAY

Safeway traces to 1915, when Marion Barton Skaggs bought his father's small grocery store in American Falls, Idaho, and built it into a chain of hundreds of stores across the West. In 1926 his company merged with the Sam Seelig Company to form Safeway, Inc. It later grew through acquisitions including Vons, Randalls, Tom Thumb, and Carrs-Safeway. In January 2015, Albertsons, backed by Cerberus Capital Management, acquired Safeway for about $9.4 billion, combining the two chains into more than 2,200 stores. Safeway now operates as an Albertsons subsidiary with roughly 900 stores across the western and mid-Atlantic United States.
