THE QUICK READ
Kulana Foods in Hilo is a USDA-certified slaughterhouse and processing plant that handles locally raised Big Island cattle, taking animals from live receiving through slaughter and full cut-and-wrap processing under one roof. With around 100 employees, the facility is one of only two slaughterhouses on Hawaii's Big Island, making it a key part of the island's ranching supply chain. Kulana supplies finished beef to restaurants and grocery stores across the Hawaiian islands. For a refrigeration tech, this is a small plant where you keep carcass coolers and processing rooms running in a tropical climate—hands-on work where every piece of equipment earns its keep.
