Kroger traces back to 1883, when Bernard Kroger opened a single grocery store in Cincinnati, Ohio. The company grew through acquisitions, most notably its 1998 merger with Fred Meyer, which brought banners including Ralphs, QFC, and Smith's into the company. Kroger also owns Harris Teeter, King Soopers, Dillons, Food 4 Less, and Mariano's, among other regional chains. As of 2023, the company operated about 2,700 stores, employed roughly 414,000 people, and reported revenue near $150 billion. Kroger is a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker KR.
