Frank's Foods has made Portuguese sausage, hot dogs, and other Hawaii-style meats in Hilo since 1955, when German-born sausage maker Frederick Frenz started the company after learning the craft as a young man and working on Maui. The USDA-inspected plant on Kawailani Street processes beef, pork, chicken, and ready-to-eat products, shipping across all the Hawaiian islands and the mainland. It is a small operation with around 100 employees, now run by Frank's son Mike Frenz, with granddaughter Cody Frenz as vice president and the next generation in line. The original smokehouse the Frenz brothers built by hand from cement blocks still stands on site as the front office.
