Cargill was founded in 1865 by William Wallace Cargill as a grain storage business in Iowa, and grew into a private, family-owned agribusiness after his son-in-law John MacMillan took over leadership in 1909. The company expanded through acquisitions including Nutrena Feeds in 1945, entry into meat processing in 1979, Cerestar in 2002, and Provimi in 2011, building divisions spanning agricultural commodities, food ingredients, animal nutrition, and meat processing. Headquartered in Minnetonka, Minnesota, Cargill employed about 155,000 people in roughly 70 countries and reported $154 billion in revenue for fiscal 2025. The Cargill-MacMillan family owns the majority of the private company.
