The Boiler Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring boiler, refrigeration, and related utility systems in an industrial manufacturing environment. This role ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of high-pressure boilers and supporting equipment that provide heat and steam for production processes. The position plays a critical role in maintaining plant operations, supporting safety, quality, and productivity objectives, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and company requirements. What you’ll be doing. Operate, monitor, start, run, and shut down high-pressure boilers and refrigeration systems supporting manufacturing operations. Read gauges, monitor system performance, and adjust controls to maintain required steam pressure, water levels, and operating conditions. Conduct routine inspections of boilers, freezer tunnels, cooling towers, and related utility equipment. Perform water chemical testing and assist with feed water and fuel treatment processes as required. Check fluid levels and lubricate equipment according to maintenance schedules. Monitor systems manually and through computerized operating platforms and databases. Perform daily sanitation and support downtime cleaning activities. Operate forklifts safely in accordance with company policies and procedures. Follow all safety requirements, including PPE usage, confined space procedures, and reporting of unsafe conditions. Support McCain Competitive Edge and Lean Manufacturing initiatives focused on Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery, and People (SQCDP). What you’ll need to be successful. Valid State of Maine Boiler Operator’s License required prior to placement. High school diploma or GED required. Minimum three months of related industrial, boiler, utility, maintenance, or manufacturing experience and/or training. Ability to complete certification through the McCain Operator Training Program. Ability to obtain and maintain McCain Forklift Certification. Ability to read and interpret safety procedures, operating instructions, maintenance manuals, and technical documentation. Basic mathematical skills, including the ability to calculate rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret graphs. Ability to learn and effectively use touch-screen control systems and Infinity Database software. Strong problem-solving, analytical, organizational, and communication skills. Demonstrated commitment to safety, quality, teamwork, dependability, and continuous improvement. Ability to work onsite in a manufacturing environment and meet attendance, overtime, weekend, holiday, and business operational requirements. About the team. This role is part of the plant Utilities and Operations team and works closely with production, maintenance, sanitation, quality, and site leadership teams to ensure reliable utility operations that support manufacturing performance.
