The Role

Job Overview

This role has a bonus/commission structure plus salary. Southeast Shellfish is an established seafood processing and wholesale business (B2B) seeking a hands-on Sales and Operations Manager to lead sales, seafood purchasing, customer relationships, logistics and support plant operations.

A major focus of this role is managing the commercial side of the business: growing sales, keeping customers well served, sourcing quality seafood, and making sound pricing and purchasing decisions. You’ll also oversee daily plant operations to ensure we deliver the right products, at the right quality, on time.

Working directly with ownership, you’ll help strengthen existing relationships, develop new business, and keep purchasing, production, and deliveries aligned with customer demand. Some weekend mornings.

What you’ll do

Sales and customer relationships

  • Serve as a primary contact for wholesale customers, building strong relationships through responsive service and consistent follow-through.
  • Manage customer orders, communicate product availability and pricing, and identify opportunities to increase sales.
  • Develop new customer relationships and expand business with existing accounts.
  • Stay informed about market conditions, seasonal demand, and customer needs.
  • Resolve quality, pricing, and delivery concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Set and maintain customer pricing within agreed guidelines, balancing competitive service with healthy margins.

Seafood purchasing and supplier relationships

  • Source and purchase clams, shellfish, and other seafood to meet customer demand and production needs.
  • Build and maintain relationships with harvesters, dealers, and other suppliers.
  • Negotiate pricing and purchasing terms, evaluate product quality, and coordinate incoming deliveries.
  • Monitor market prices, supply availability, inventory, and product movement to make timely purchasing decisions.
  • Develop dependable backup sources and manage purchasing to limit spoilage, shortages, and excess inventory.

Plant operations and team leadership

  • Oversee daily receiving, processing, packing, and shipping activities. M-F 6am-2pm. Some Saturdays.
  • Coordinate production schedules, staffing, and deliveries around customer orders and available product.
  • Supervise plant employees and drivers, communicate priorities, and help resolve daily operational issues.
  • Maintain standards for food safety, sanitation, temperature control, and shellfish traceability.
  • Monitor product yields, waste, inventory accuracy, and operating costs.
  • Coordinate equipment and facility maintenance needs.
  • Ensure accurate order entry, invoicing, and communication between customers, the plant, drivers, and ownership.

What we’re looking for

  • Experience in seafood sales, purchasing, wholesale distribution, or a closely related business.
  • A track record of building customer and supplier relationships.
  • Strong commercial judgment, including pricing, negotiation, inventory management, and margin awareness.
  • The ability to win business, retain customers, and follow through on commitments.
  • Experience leading employees and coordinating daily operations.
  • Strong organization and the ability to adjust quickly when supply, pricing, or customer needs change.
  • Comfort using business software; QuickBooks Online experience is a plus.
  • Willingness to work in both the office and plant and help wherever the business needs support.

Especially helpful

  • Knowledge of clams, shellfish, and fresh seafood markets.
  • Established relationships with seafood buyers, harvesters, or suppliers.
  • Experience managing a seafood processing or wholesale operation.
  • Seafood HACCP training and familiarity with shellfish handling and traceability.
