About the role
Reworld is seeking a hands-on Plant Engineer to improve performance, efficiency, and equipment reliability at its waste-to-energy facility in West Wareham, Massachusetts. This position combines field troubleshooting and operations support with applied engineering, process optimization, equipment replacement, and project execution. The successful candidate can interpret operating trends, understand combustion and steam generation, and independently move problems from diagnosis to implemented solutions.
- Work arrangement: Full-time, on-site
- Reports to: Manager, Regional Engineering, working closely with the Facility Manager
- Annual Bonus Target: 10% performance bonus opportunity
- Sign-on bonus: Eligible for a sign-on bonus.
At Reworld, engineers apply their technical expertise to an essential industry that converts waste into energy and supports more sustainable communities. The Plant Engineer partners with Operations, Maintenance, regional engineering, and corporate process engineering to improve plant output, address recurring equipment problems, and deliver practical engineering improvements.
The role balances operations support and engineering with roughly equal emphasis. It requires someone comfortable investigating plant problems, performing engineering analysis, developing technical recommendations, and coordinating implementation. Plant performance and project execution are the primary focus; all work must support safe operation and applicable environmental requirements. The successful candidate must be able to analyze operating trends, determine why the plant is not achieving expected load or output, and implement practical corrective actions that improve reliability, efficiency, and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Plant Performance and Process Troubleshooting
- Review daily plant performance metrics, equipment history, alarms, and operating trends to identify deviations from expected performance.
- Investigate why the plant is not achieving expected load or output, identify contributing process and equipment limitations, and implement corrective actions.
- Troubleshoot combustion, steam-generation, process-control, and equipment-reliability issues using field observations, engineering calculations, operating data, and root cause analysis.
- Optimize operating conditions and controls to improve combustion performance, efficiency, equipment availability, and reliable plant output.
- Prepare performance reports, lead weekly production-improvement discussions, and maintain the facility's Production Action Items list.
- Present findings, recommendations, implementation needs, and measured results to facility and regional leadership.
Applied Mechanical and Process Engineering
- Perform engineering calculations, evaluate design alternatives, size equipment, and develop equipment specifications for plant modifications and replacements.
- Support mechanical and process systems including boilers, pumps, piping, fuel handling, combustion equipment, grates, and spray dryer absorber (SDA) systems.
- Apply working knowledge of instrumentation, process controls, and basic electrical systems to multidisciplinary troubleshooting and modifications.
- Evaluate equipment condition and recommend repair, replacement, or redesign based on safety, reliability, performance, lifecycle cost, and operating requirements.
- Interpret Boiler Condition Assessment Reports and translate findings into prioritized engineering and maintenance recommendations.
- Obtain required technical reviews and approvals before implementing operational, process, or equipment changes.
Engineering Projects, Outages, and Contractor Oversight
- Independently develop and execute capital and operational improvement projects, coordinating scope, calculations, design, specifications, budgets, schedules, construction, commissioning, and handover.
- Coordinate internal technical resources, equipment suppliers, third-party engineers, and contractors across mechanical, pr
