The Role

Help Keep Northern Michigan Moving

BATA is seeking an experienced, collaborative maintenance leader to oversee its fleet, facilities, equipment, and supporting infrastructure.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director and serving on BATA’s Leadership Team, the Manager, Maintenance leads preventive and corrective maintenance, inspections, repairs, workforce development, contractor oversight, and long-range asset planning. This hands-on management role helps ensure employees have safe, dependable vehicles and facilities to deliver reliable transportation.

The Manager oversees assigned maintenance employees, operating and capital budgets, parts and inventory, warranties, fueling and charging infrastructure, and maintenance systems. Working closely with Operations and Service Planning and Scheduling, the position coordinates vehicle availability, addresses service disruptions, and advances practical improvements in safety, reliability, and efficiency. Cross-training and temporary management coverage support continuity across departments.

BATA provided nearly 496,000 passenger trips in FY2026, connecting residents and visitors throughout Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties with employment, education, healthcare, shopping, and recreation. With modern operations and maintenance facilities and an emphasis on employee development and continuous improvement, BATA offers an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the community.

Qualifications

Candidates should bring sound technical judgment, demonstrated maintenance leadership, and the ability to coach employees and build effective working relationships across departments.

Qualifications include:

  • A bachelor’s degree in fleet management, facilities management, engineering, business administration, maintenance management, or a closely related field.
  • Five years of progressively responsible maintenance or related technical experience, including three years of supervisory or management experience and demonstrated responsibility for vehicle maintenance programs and budgets.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • A valid driver’s license and ability to meet BATA’s driving requirements.

Public transit experience and relevant professional certifications are preferred. Candidates with comparable fleet and facilities experience in public works, utilities, government, commercial transportation, or other safety-sensitive organizations are encouraged to apply.

Anticipated Hiring Range: $98,615–$115,873, depending on qualifications, directly related experience, and demonstrated knowledge, skills, and abilities.

BATA offers a competitive benefits package, including MERS retirement, health, dental, and vision insurance, paid time off, holidays, life insurance, and professional development opportunities.
