The Role

Come Grow With Us – Lead / Senior HVAC-R Technician

Why Join Quality Refrigeration? Quality Refrigeration is a 3-generation company leading the way in A2L, CO2, and low-GWP refrigerant transitions, while equipping technicians with BuildOps and modern field tech. Come grow with us as we expand our services across commercial and industrial spaces.

We are seeking a Senior / Lead HVAC-R Technician ($45–$60/hr based on experience). In this role, you will diagnose complex commercial and industrial refrigeration systems, handle startups and overhauls, and mentor rising technicians—because the industry needs our help to build the next generation of skilled technicians. We take pride in our commitment to doing our best to keep customers' equipment running if they are not ready to upgrade.

Position Summary: Serves as the primary field technical expert and mentor. Responsible for advanced diagnostics, overhauls, commissioning, and root-cause failure analysis on complex commercial and industrial refrigeration systems, including racks, chillers, split systems, and rooftop equipment.

Leads multi-technician projects, interfaces with DDC/BAS controls, assists with job estimations, and maintains our commitment to keeping client equipment running efficiently whenever an immediate upgrade isn't feasible.

Essential Responsibilities:

1. Master Diagnostics & Root Cause Analysis

  • Diagnose and resolve complex mechanical, control, and electrical failures in commercial and industrial spaces.
  • Perform comprehensive root cause failure analysis on compressors, motor windings, electronic expansion valves (EEVs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and multi-circuit refrigeration plants.
  • Execute system performance analysis, system balancing, and energy efficiency assessments

2. Advanced Systems, Controls & BAS/DDC Integration

  • Configure, program, calibrate, and troubleshoot controllers for remote-controlled systems, including platforms such as Ke2, Carel, Dixell, CPC/Emerson (E2/E3), and Danfoss.
  • Troubleshoot complex 24V - 480V 3-phase electrical systems.
  • Lead retrofits and transitions involving alternative refrigerants (A2L, CO2, low-GWP).

3. Project Leadership & Commissioning Authority

  • Serve as on-site project lead for major overhauls, compressor changeouts, piping redesigns, and new system startups.
  • Lead end-to-end commissioning procedures: deep vacuum decay verification (<500 microns), high-pressure nitrogen decay checks, superheat/subcooling settings

4. Field Mentorship & Technical Training

  • Act as the technical escalation point for Level 1 and Level 2 technicians, offering over-the-phone troubleshooting guidance and hands-on site support.
  • Provide side-by-side field training and mentorship to build skilled technicians, knowing the industry needs our help to develop the next generation.

5. Customer Advisory & Professional Representation

  • Advise commercial and industrial clients, doing our best to keep existing equipment running if they are not ready to upgrade.
  • Conduct comprehensive facility walkthroughs, articulate complex mechanical findings clearly to business owners or MOD, and present sound preventative solutions as needed.
  • Handle technical escalations with clarity and professionalism.

6. Administrative Accuracy & BuildOps Management

  • Complete thorough, professional service logs, reports, and add equipment data in BuildOps prior to leaving the job site. Invoicing proficiency and the ability to identify pull-through / recommendation work are critical to better serve our customers and generate opportunities.
  • Assist service management with job costing audits, material takeoffs, parts staging, and technical scope drafting for major repair estimates..
  • Ensure all customer sign-offs, purchase order numbers, equipment serial/nameplate photos, and warranty data are meticulously documented.

7. Safety Culture, Vehicle & Asset Leadership

  • Model and strictly enforce OSHA regulations, EPA Section 608 mandates, ASHRAE 15 mechanical room safety standards, and NFPA 70E electrical safety practices..
  • Maintain high standards for safety, truck stock, and tool condition.
  • Anchor the rotating emergency on-call schedule for critical commercial refrigeration clients.
