The Role

Summary

Demain is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to help advance how building systems are engineered, fabricated, and installed.

This role focuses on the engineering and design of HVAC and plumbing systems, integrating engineering intent with constructability, prefabrication, and installation requirements. Working alongside engineers, production modelers, construction professionals, and trade partners, you'll help develop practical, production-ready solutions that bridge traditional engineering design and industrialized construction.

Unlike conventional consulting engineering roles, this position offers the opportunity to directly influence how building systems are fabricated, assembled, and installed. You'll contribute to innovative projects while helping shape the engineering standards and workflows of a growing industrialized construction company.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Mechanical and Plumbing Engineering Design:

  • Perform engineering calculations, equipment sizing, and system design for HVAC and plumbing systems.
  • Develop HVAC designs including heating and cooling loads, equipment selection, air distribution, ventilation, and hydronic systems.
  • Develop plumbing designs including domestic water distribution, sanitary and vent systems, storm drainage, and associated equipment.
  • Prepare engineering drawings, schedules, specifications, and supporting documentation in accordance with applicable codes and project requirements.
  • Advance engineering deliverables from conceptual design through construction documentation.

Engineering Support for Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DfMA):

  • Collaborate with MEP VDC and trade partners to incorporate constructability, prefabrication, and assembly considerations into engineering designs.
  • Evaluate proposed fabrication and installation approaches for consistency with engineering intent, system performance, and applicable codes.
  • Provide engineering input and technical support during the development of prefabricated assemblies and production models.
  • Support opportunities for system standardization and repeatability through coordinated engineering solutions.

Coordination and Integration:

  • Coordinate mechanical and plumbing designs with architectural, structural, electrical, and other building systems.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary design reviews and coordination meetings.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to resolve design and constructability challenges.

Deliverables and Documentation:

  • Prepare and maintain engineering calculations, drawings, equipment schedules, specifications, and project documentation.
  • Develop engineering deliverables that account for the unique requirements of off-site fabrication, shop assembly, and field installation.
  • Coordinate engineering documentation with MEP VDC and trade partners to support the transition from design to production.
  • Support responses to RFIs, submittal reviews, and construction-phase engineering activities.
  • Incorporate design revisions and coordinate changes with project teams.

Problem-Solving:

  • Identify and resolve technical design challenges through engineering analysis and collaboration.
  • Progress engineering assignments independently while recognizing when senior technical guidance is required.
  • Evaluate alternative design approaches to improve constructability, efficiency, and project outcomes.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Communicate effectively with engineering leads, project managers, production modelers, and project stakeholders.
  • Collaborate across engineering, fabrication, and construction disciplines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes and standards.

Competencies

  • Strong understanding of HVAC and plumbing systems and engineering fundamentals.
  • Ability to independently progress engineering designs with appropriate technical oversight.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to quality engineering deliverables.
  • Understanding of constructability and practical installation considerations.
  • Continuous improvement mindset and strong communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience in HVAC and/or plumbing engineering design, with demonstrated experience or willingness to develop proficiency in both disciplines.
  • Experience designing building systems for commercial, institutional, or industrial projects.
  • Proficiency in Autodesk Revit.
  • Experience performing HVAC load calculations, equipment sizing, and plumbing system calculations.
  • Working knowledge of applicable mechanical, plumbing, energy, and building codes.
  • Ability to independently progress engineering calculations, designs, and construction documents with appropriate senior technical guidance and review.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Engineer-in-Train
