MRBraz & Associates operates one of the most integrated refrigeration platforms in North America — spanning engineering, manufacturing, construction, and service under a single operating model. Through its nationwide field infrastructure, we deliver full-lifecycle refrigeration execution from design to commissioned, operating reality. This role places you at the center of a live, large-scale ammonia commissioning project: thirty-five (35) R-717 direct expansion packages at a site in New Jersey. What sets this opportunity apart: Direct commissioning, start up and handover authority on a greenfield, low-charge ammonia installation — engineered for up to ~85% charge reduction versus conventional designs"Person in charge" designation under NJ regulatory framework from day one of live operationFull lifecycle exposure: installation readiness through final owner turnover, with a potential path to Designated Chief Engineer (DCE)Work within a mission-driven organization committed to safety, energy efficiency, and disciplined environmental stewardship — not just as policy language, but as operating reality Responsibilities Perform routine inspections, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs on refrigeration systems, including ammonia refrigeration units and HVAC/R equipment.Read and interpret schematics, technical manuals, and wiring diagrams to troubleshoot complex mechanical and electrical issues effectively.Conduct equipment repairs using appropriate tools such as ohmmeters, welders, and other diagnostic instruments to ensure optimal operation.Install, modify, and upgrade refrigeration and HVAC systems in compliance with safety standards and engineering specifications.Maintain detailed service records, work orders, and maintenance logs to track system performance and repair history.Collaborate with construction teams during new installations or upgrades of refrigeration infrastructure.Ensure all work complies with safety protocols related to property maintenance, plumbing, boiler operation, and ammonia handling. Required Qualifications Active NJ Gold Seal Refrigeration Engineer License — 1st Grade / Class 2-A (must be current and in good standing at time of offer)Demonstrated experience operating ammonia refrigeration systems with capacity exceeding 300 tonsWorking knowledge of IIAR standards, ammonia safety protocols, and commissioning startup proceduresProven ability to function as "person in charge" under NJ regulatory requirements in live ammonia environmentsCapacity to mobilize rapidly and sustain extended, shift-intensive commissioning schedulesCredentialed and operationally capable of serving as "person in charge" under live ammonia conditions per NJ regulatory requirementsAbility to mobilize rapidly and sustain extended commissioning schedules Preferred Qualifications Prior ammonia cold storage commissioning or startup experience as lead or supervising engineerDirect experience supporting NJ Department of Labor inspections and Certificate of Inspection processesExposure to low-charge, modular, or energy-efficient ammonia refrigeration system architecturesFamiliarity with IIAR 2, IIAR 6, and related process safety standards for ammonia systems What we are looking for: Active NJ Gold Seal Refrigeration Engineer License — 1st Grade / Class 2-A (non-negotiable; cannot be in process)Demonstrated operating experience on ammonia refrigeration systemsMaintain constant on-site attendance — within sight/sound with immediate intervention capability — whenever the ammonia system is operating, charging, testing, or under pressureServe as the licensed operator in direct charge of the refrigeration plant; fulfill "person in charge" role and support DCE designation as required by NJ regulatory frameworkSupervise and direct ammonia charging, leak testing, functional testing, pump-down, and initial sustained operation per IIAR standards and approved proceduresExecute and enforce startup, shutdown, normal operation, and emergency response procedures — no deviations without documented authorizationPerform and document daily safety inspections: leaks, corrosion, mechanical distortion, pressure anomalies, and control calibration verificationMaintain and sign the official plant logbook with required operational data, inspection records, and incident documentationCoordinate with MRBraz field technicians, the general
