Senior Test Engineer – Centrifugal Chillers
Compensation
The Role
Build your best future with the Johnson Controls team! Johnson Controls delivers thermal management, mission-critical building systems, energy efficiency, and decarbonization solutions that help customers use energy more productively, reduce carbon emissions, and support precision and resilience in demanding environments such as data centers, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, advanced manufacturing, and higher education. What you will do As a Test Engineer, you will provide active, hands-on day-to-day support for large tonnage water-cooled centrifugal chiller testing. You will manage each test from planning and design through execution, analysis, and completion, while supporting plant operations, troubleshooting technical issues, and presenting results to internal teams and external customers. This role requires strong HVAC/R knowledge, test instrumentation experience, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment. Key Responsibilities Plan and execute water-cooled centrifugal chiller tests from test design through final completion. Work with the sales engineer to align on test plans, required conditions, and customer test requirements. Create detailed test requests and define the conditions needed to meet engineering and customer expectations. Set up and support data acquisition software, test instrumentation, and related test facility systems. Troubleshoot and resolve chiller performance issues and data acquisition system issues during testing. Support factory witness testing and communicate issues, resolution paths, and results to sales engineers and external customers. Prepare and present test summaries to product engineering for further analysis. Present lab function, calibration methods, instrumentation records, and AHRI and Eurovent testing procedures and tolerances to customers. Work with sales engineers and customers to resolve concerns or misunderstandings related to testing. Participate in the revision of standard procedures, test standards, and lab processes. Recommend new procedures, processes, or resources that improve testing efficiency, accuracy, and capability. Adhere to the Company’s Code of Conduct and Business Ethics standards. How You Will Do It Own each test end to end by staying accountable for planning, execution, analysis, and follow-through until the work is complete. Stay close to the work by taking a hands-on approach to chiller setup, plant support, instrumentation, and troubleshooting in the lab. Use clear, candid problem-solving to diagnose technical issues quickly, document findings accurately, and keep stakeholders informed. Collaborate as one team with sales engineers, operations, product engineering, and customers to align on expectations and remove obstacles to successful testing. Improve every day by identifying better ways to run tests, refine procedures, and strengthen data quality and reporting. What we look for BSEE, ME, EET, MET, or a related physical science degree. At least 4 years of direct work experience in large tonnage water-cooled chiller equipment development testing. Strong understanding of HVAC/R systems, concepts, and diagnostics as applied to both test subjects and test facilities. Background in engineering and testing with experience using test instrumentation for data acquisition and data analysis. Experience troubleshooting test issues, diagnosing problems, and preparing technical reports. Strong verbal and written communication skills, including communication with internal teams and external customers. Ability to work under general or minimal supervision with a high degree of independence. Ability to manage several concurrent projects in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment. Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, as well as Internet software and e-mail. Understanding of refrigeration systems and concepts. Nice to Have Experience with factory witness testing. Electronics and software experience, especially with starters, variable frequency drives, and control systems. Sound and/or vibration testing experience, including instrumentation and acquisition or analysis software. Experience with LabVIEW and National Instruments hardware or software. Experience recommending new procedures or resources to improve testing services.
